Today, we are interviewing Lise Chlebanowski, a bookstore industry expert. This beautiful woman let me have my first ever book signing at her store awhile back, and then even let me come back for a second signing. After spending lots of quality time with her during these events, it was evident that she is an expert on all things books and what works for authors who are marketing their work, especially when working directly with a bookstore. I’ve invited her to answer the questions we all wonder as authors. Let’s begin!
Tell us about yourself and your experience in the book industry.
I have a master’s degree in library science so most of my experience comes from that side. I’ve worked as a bookseller for about 3 years.
As someone who has experience in the bookstore industry, what do you think attracts a potential reader to the shelf the most?
Good signage, lots of face outs.
What is the first thing you notice about a book?
The cover (same with wine) LOL
How do you know which books you will recommend to a customer if they ask?
I always ask what they’ve read and liked before. Many times they are coming back to reading and may not have a title in mind. In that case, I’ll ask what genre of TV/Movies they enjoy. If it’s a genre I read I’ll recommend something I enjoyed and will be specific about why.
Thank you for joining us today and God bless!
