Bring your writing to life! Christian Avila is a professional (and very talented) Digital Concept Artist. He brings ideas to life through art, and as a writer, I personally got to experience the miracle of this firsthand when I ordered a piece of concept art for my screenplay, “Superhero: The Movie” (actually, it’s a series). The purpose of me looking for concept art was so that I could have an eye-catching piece of marketing material for my portfolio. I wanted production companies and readers to get a real feel for my story in a way that only imagery can. After spending hours searching online for a very particular look (and reviewing many, many artist portfolios), Christian’s work stood out the most. Once I placed the order, Christian got to work right away. Being the writer I am, I must have sent him a five paragraph essay of what I was going for: from the way the characters’ faces looked, to their clothes, to the overall color palette, to the superpowers I needed portrayed in the image. Christian took every piece of information into very careful consideration, asked inquisitive questions, and filled in all the gaps that I couldn’t. After seeing his professionalism and willingness to make the art exactly what I wanted, my trust in him grew exponentially, and I ended up giving him artistic freedom on a lot of the important parts because I knew he would do great!
Here is the end result:
Here is where I ended up posting the art along with a summary of the screenplay itself:
Didn’t it all come together beautifully? As readers of my blog, you all know that when I find an amazing artist of any kind, I have to feature them on my blog and interview them! So without further ado, let’s begin!
Tell us about your work and what you specialize in?
My work; I really love making realistic paintings. My specialty is comic book drawings but I’ve made realistic painting more of my specialty as of recently.
What inspired you to get into the art industry?
What inspired me to get into the art industry was my constant flashes of ideas, images, and scenes that would play in my head since I was a toddler. I always catch myself fantasizing about these scenes for as long as I can remember. So I decided that maybe I could draw those ideas. Then little by little I fell in love with the feel of the pen and pencils, the imperfections in some strokes that make up a style. Just the little things I picked up as an artist over the years.
Where do you get ideas for new art pieces?
I get my ideas from movies, books, comic books, real life, past personal events, strong emotional feelings. Anything that I can understand very well, I can draw or paint. Anything I don’t, I always love to explore and learn more.
What materials and software do you use to draw?
For materials I use: Sharpened pencil, India Ink fine point pen, and a white eraser (to avoid smudges) or I use my Huion 13 inch tablet with photoshop cs5.
What advice would you give to someone who is just beginning to learn how to draw?
Advice I would give to a beginning artist is: never stop looking for ways to learn. Always use reference because that’s what all great artists do and always look for a way to fail in your drawings because that’s the fastest way to learn and improve.
